Mining has shaped the North West Queensland region for more than a century, with the discovery of vast mineral deposits transforming the outback into one of Australia's most productive mining provinces. Rich in copper, lead, zinc and silver, the Mount Isa region is recognised internationally for its world-class mineral resources and continues to play a vital role in Australia's economy.

The story of Mount Isa began in 1923, when prospector John Campbell Miles discovered rich lead and silver deposits while searching for gold. This discovery led to the establishment of Mount Isa Mines in 1924, laying the foundations for what would become one of the world's largest integrated mining and processing operations. Over the decades, further discoveries of copper, zinc and silver cemented Mount Isa's reputation as one of the world's great mining cities, with innovations developed here influencing mining operations across the globe.

Today, mining remains at the heart of the region's identity, supporting generations of local families and communities while continuing to supply essential minerals used in everyday life around the world.
