Free Camping & Traveller Facilities
Heading East towards Cloncurry?
Located approximately 55km East of Mount Isa, the former Mary Kathleen uranium mining township is one of the region's most unique free camping experiences.
Today, the streets and concrete slabs of the old township remain, providing plenty of space for self-contained caravans, campers and motorhomes. There are no facilities, so campers need to be completely self-sufficient.
Mary Kathleen is located on private property and visitors are asked to respect the land, leave gates as they find them and take all rubbish with them.
The old mine site can also be explored from the township; however, road conditions can vary and some sections are better suited to high-clearance or 4WD vehicles.
Not camping at Mary Kathleen but would love to visit? Jump on one of the North West Tours and let someone else do the driving.
Corella Dam & Clem Walton Park
Free camping is available at Corella Dam and Clem Walton Park, located approximately 82km East of Mount Isa on private property.
Camp beside the water and enjoy fishing, kayaking, birdwatching and spectacular Outback sunsets. Both Corella Dam and Clem Walton Park offer free camping, with basic facilities available in the area. Visitors should still arrive prepared to be largely self-sufficient.
Access is via a dirt road off the Barkly Highway and conditions can change after wet weather, so it's worth checking before heading in.
Heading West towards Camooweal?
Approximately 54km north-west of Mount Isa on the Barkly Highway, this stop over provides a free short-term roadside stopping option for travellers.
Rest areas are designed primarily for travellers to stop and rest, so always check signage when you arrive for current stay limits and conditions.
Heading South towards Boulia?
Located in the small outback community of Dajarra, approximately 150 km south of Mount Isa, Dajarra Campground is a handy free stop for travellers heading towards Boulia. The campground offers basic unpowered camping with toilet facilities and plenty of space for caravans, campers and motorhomes. It’s a great place to break up the drive and experience a quiet outback town along the way.
Peak Creek Rest Area
Free overnight stopping point on the Diamantina Developmental Road, approximately 65 km north of Boulia. The roadside rest area has toilets, a picnic shelter and room for caravans, motorhomes and camper trailers. Overnight stays are permitted, with travellers advised to check signage on arrival for current time limits and conditions.
