Rodeo Hall of Fame

Maltha Waru Regional Arts Workshop

The Maltha Waru Regional Arts Workshop is a vibrant initiative celebrating Indigenous art and culture in Mount Isa. Maltha Waru, meaning "Many Paths" in the Kalkadoon language, embodies the diverse artistic expressions and stories of the region. This workshop offers a platform for local Indigenous artists to showcase their talents and share their heritage through various mediums, including painting, sculpture, and wearable art.

Allen’s Outback Gems

A stunning rock collection found by Ian Leslie Allen (1931 – 2017). Known as the ‘Rock Man’ of Mount Isa, Ian’s private collection was considered by many as one of the most comprehensive private collections of crystals, rocks and minerals in Australia.

Outback Park Botanical Garden

The Outback Park at Outback at Isa  is a serene native botanical garden that showcases the diverse flora of the Australian outback. This tranquil space invites visitors to connect with nature and discover the traditional uses of native plants. It’s also a fantastic spot for birdwatching—thanks to its lush native plantings, central lagoon, and shaded areas, the park attracts a wide variety of bird species, making it an ideal location for both novice and seasoned bird enthusiasts.

Kalkadoon Tribal Centre

The centre serves as a repository for the Kalkadoon people's history, traditions, and art. North West Tours - Best of Mount Isa Tour

Mount Isa City Lookout 

Get a spectacular bird’s eye view of Mount Isa from the city’s Hilary Street lookout. The lookout with its global signpost, offers a 360-degree panorama of the city and mine area. Drop by when you arrive to town to gain an excellent idea of the lay of the land.
Take a selfie at the World Traveller signpost and catch an Outback sunset as it unfolds; the sparkly night-time view with its city lights and billions of stars is highly recommended, or enjoy a casual meal at one of the shaded picnic tables.

Visit Outback at Isa for a free map to enable you to identify landmarks from the lookout.

Camooweal 

Just two hours west of Mount Isa along the Barkly Highway lies Camooweal — still part of the city, despite being 189 km away. Known as “the longest main street in the world,” this small town offers big Outback experiences.

Visit the ancient Camooweal Caves National Park and take in the view from Great Nowranie Cave — public access to the caves is restricted, but the lookout is impressive. The park is best accessed by 4WD, though conventional vehicles can make it in dry weather. While camping isn’t allowed in the park, it’s open 24/7 for stunning sunrise and sunset views.

Free camping is available along the Georgina River, where birdlife is abundant and the setting is pure Outback serenity. Pitch your tent by the billabong, brew some billy tea, and soak in the quiet.

Just 1 km from town, The Drover’s Camp is a must-visit. Hear stories from real ex-drovers, explore historical displays, and browse an impressive collection of Australiana books and art.


Mount Isa Mines Rodeo

The largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere, the Isa Rodeo, is held on the second weekend of August and while the rodeo competition in the spectacular red dirt Buchanan Park arena is world-class, there will be plenty to do during rodeo week.

The Bell & Moir Isa Rodeo Ball will kick off rodeo week celebrations on Saturday night, culminating in the crowning of the Isa Rodeo Queen and Charity Queen. Next up is the free Isa Street Festival presented by the Mount Isa City Council on Wednesday night, with a street parade, plenty of market and food stalls in the centre of town and huge free concert finishing with a fireworks finale! It will be held over three days - from Friday August 8 to Sunday August 10 - at Buchanan Park.

The Indigenous Rodeo Championships will be held on the Sunday morning, and the open finals will be held on the Sunday afternoon. 

Australian country music performer Luke Geiger will have the party going well into the night when he performs on both the Friday and Saturday nights.

Lake Moondarra

Lake Moondarra is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, offering a variety of recreational activities:

Water Sports: The lake's calm waters are ideal for swimming, boating, sailing, and canoeing.

Fishing: Anglers can enjoy fishing for species like barramundi and sooty grunter. Fishing permits are not required, but catch limits apply.

Picnicking: Several scenic picnic areas with large shady trees are available, making it a perfect spot for barbecues and family gatherings. 

Birdwatching: The lake attracts a diverse range of birdlife, including pelicans, cormorants, galahs, and ducks, offering excellent photographic opportunities

Wallaby Walk: short scenic hiking/walking trail offering panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings. This 0.8-kilometre out-and-back trail is generally considered easy with some loose rocks and lack of shade, sturdy footwear and sun protection is advisable.

The lake is accessible via a sealed road, offering a scenic shoreline drive.

Wugudaji - Adels Grove

Adels Grove Camping Ground is an eco-sensitive Tourist Camping Park on Lawn Hill Creek, located 10 kilometres downstream from Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park and 50km from the world heritage Riversleigh Fossil fields.

Camping – Top Campground
This area is set in natural bushland with over 60 set sites. Many sites have a fireplace and/or tap available, though water is limited by gravity fed pressure. There are pet-friendly sites that can accommodate visitors wanting to use a generator (rules apply). Amenities blocks are located between The Grove and Top camping areas.

Camping – The Grove
This is a large shady area situated on the beautiful Lawn Hill Creek. There are no set sites in this area and is very popular for family groups wanting to camp together. Small campfires are permitted but no pets or generators. Amenities blocks are located between The Grove and Top camping areas.

The resort is an oasis retreat for the dusty, tired traveller: a perfect place to refresh, relax and recover. You can lie back and watch the cool aqua water meander through the park.  

All routes into Wugudaji-Adels Grove have a certain amount of the road not sealed and it is not recommended for unsuitable vehicles.  It is recommended that all vehicles travelling to Wugudaji-Adels Grove obtain an update on the state of the road and conditions from relevant sources.
